The brand name of a car doesn't tell its whole story. The same Audi, BMW, Mercedes or Volkswagen can exist over several generations, with different controls, paddles or steering wheel equipment. The VIN allows you to precisely identify the vehicle before choosing a steering wheel family.
What is the VIN for on a steering wheel?
The vehicle identification number is assigned to a specific car. It completes the visible information, such as the model, the year of first registration and the design of the steering wheel. This is particularly useful when a model name spans multiple generations or a facelift.
The VIN helps verify the period and original configuration. It does not replace the photos or the list of equipment, because they are what show the real presence of buttons, paddles or heating. Together, this information provides a solid basis for identifying the family to be monitored.
What information should you transmit with the VIN?
Have the exact model, year, trim and generation code ready when you know it. Add a front photo of the steering wheel with the wheels straight, then a photo of each control block. Paddles behind the steering wheel must also appear in the photos.
Finally indicate the functions that are part of your configuration: heating, multifunction controls, regulator, paddles and driving assistance system using hand detection. Two vehicles of the same model may differ on these points.

Why is one year alone not enough?
The year of first registration may be different from the model year. It does not always specify whether your car belongs to the first phase, a restyling or a next generation. Manufacturers can also change the buttons or driving aids without changing the commercial name.
The generation codes provide another level of reading: 8V and 8Y at Audi, F80 and G80 at BMW, W205 and W206 at Mercedes. The VIN allows you to attach your vehicle to this frame, then the photos confirm its visible configuration.
What elements of the steering wheel should be checked?
Compatibility mainly comes down to the hub, airbag module and controls. In the current configuration at Apex, you keep your original airbag. Its shape, its fixings and the selected family must correspond to the vehicle.
Multifunction buttons, paddles and heating must also be indicated. Some driving aids use a capacitive surface integrated into the steering wheel to detect hands. This equipment must be identified before manufacturing, in the same way as the other functions present.
