La réponse courte

Changing your car steering wheel starts from a new original-manufacturer base, with your original airbag and the functions included in the validated configuration. Allow €529 to €599 for a base, around 4 weeks for leather or Alcantara and 4 to 6 weeks for carbon. Your car remains available during production because you keep the current steering wheel until delivery.

The steering wheel is the most constant point of contact in a car. When it is worn, too thin, or simply no longer suits your taste, replacing it changes the cabin immediately. The project starts by identifying the right steering-wheel family, the functions to retain and the manufacturing lead time.

Is it allowed to change your steering wheel?

A steering-wheel replacement concerns part of the vehicle's steering system. The result must keep an appropriate mounting, an operational airbag and the safety functions identified for the vehicle. A personalised, made-to-measure steering wheel starts from a new original-manufacturer base, then receives the materials and finishes you choose.

The material, rim thickness, stitching and inserts change the look and feel. The airbag module, controls and components planned for the validated configuration remain the technical references. Read our guide to steering-wheel legality before choosing.

What happens to the airbag?

You retain your original airbag. Its module, connector and mounting points are transferred to the new steering wheel matched to your vehicle. When an airbag section is selected in the configurator, it refers to the cosmetic cover around the centre.

Switch off the ignition, disconnect the battery and follow the discharge time specified by the manufacturer before any work. A professional can handle the fitting if you prefer. Our guide covers airbag transfer during a steering-wheel change.

Good to know

Your current steering wheel stays in the car during production. The new one is built from a new original-manufacturer base, so your vehicle remains available until delivery.

Are the original functions retained?

Audio controls, phone controls, cruise control, paddles and other features planned for your configuration are handled with the relevant components. You can reuse your original buttons or choose new OEM buttons when they are available for the steering-wheel family.

Heated steering and hands-on detection systems must be mentioned before production. They are part of the information used to confirm the configuration.

What budget should you allow?

Apex bases range from €529 to €599, depending on the vehicle. The configurator then shows the effect of the shape, materials and finishes you select. Leather and Alcantara offer different hand feel, while woven or forged carbon shapes the visual areas.

Leather and Alcantara configurations take around 4 weeks. Allow 4 to 6 weeks for carbon. Every steering wheel has a 2-year warranty covering stitching, material, mounting and electronic components.

How do you choose the material?

Start with the sides, where your hands spend most of their time. Nappa leather is regular and familiar. Alcantara gives a more pronounced grip. The upper and lower sections can extend that material or introduce carbon for contrast.

Our guide to leather, Alcantara or carbon for your steering wheel helps you allocate these materials by use and visual result.

How do you check compatibility?

Prepare the model, generation code, year and the equipment on your current steering wheel. Photos of the front, buttons and paddles complete these details. The VIN can also help place the vehicle in its original configuration.

Our compatibility guide by brand and generation explains what to check before ordering.

What happens during fitting?

When the parcel arrives, the original steering wheel is removed and the airbag and planned components are transferred. In most configurations, fitting is direct with the supplied guide. Your original steering wheel remains available should you wish to return the car to its original setup.

At-home fitting is available in Belgium for customers who want a professional to handle the installation.
